Green Deal Suffers Another Body Blow

There’s been further Green Deal embarrassment for the government.

A couple of weeks ago it was revealed that just over 200 people had committed to the scheme, despite more than 40,000 assessments taking place. Now, experts have claimed that installing the stream of energy efficient measures included could result in properties overheating during heat waves, potentially affecting the health of inhabitants or in extreme cases, even causing death.

The risk it presents is due to heat being unable to escape, particularly in properties where energy efficient measures are present and which are positioned in direct proximity to the sun. Those considered most at risk are the elderly and infirm should future summers follow a similar pattern to the weather we are currently experiencing.

The Department for Energy and Climate Change has passed on advice to Green Deal suppliers to help counteract the issue but it can be difficult to determine which households are most at risk of overheating.

There are other suggestions for anyone participating in the scheme worried about overheating such as the installation of window shutters or blinds to try and counteract the warmth of the sun. But whether they will be effective enough to quell the problem is open to debate.

Rather than employ such a thorough level of insulation in your home you could always install a few home improvements off your own back.

New windows and doors are a great way of eliminating draughts so that your property feels warmer and you pay less on your energy bills.
