Homeowners Reaching End Of Fixed Energy Tariff Warned To Be On Their Guard

One way of securing yourself against the never-ending rise in household fuel costs is to sign up to a fixed-rate tariff. Being tied into a 1-4 year tariff at a fixed cost means that’s the only price you will pay throughout the duration of the deal.

The chances of you paying over the odds are highly unlikely as the chances of fuel bills dropping any time soon are as likely as England winning the World Cup – slim to none. However, once a fixed tariff reaches its conclusion, uSwitch has warned customers that they could find themselves paying anything up to £232 more annually.

Each of the big six suppliers supply fixed-rate tariffs that are shortly due to end. What regularly happens when the contract expires is that the relevant supplier will automatically switch the customer onto a standard package, which more often than not costs substantially more.

Those who are currently on EDF’s Energy Fixed Price 2013 plan will be switched to a tariff worth an additional £232 per year.

Rather than allow this to happen, customers need to check when their deal is set to run out and contact their existing supplier shortly beforehand to find out which alternative package they will be put onto.

If it will prove to be a more expensive move then they should look into switching to another supplier, either on another fixed-term deal or whichever other tariff provides the best value for money.

Does that all make sense? Hopefully it does, but what we know definitely makes perfect sense is coinciding your tariff switch with the purchasing of double or triple glazing.
