How To Cut Energy Bills Without It Affecting Home Life
It is isn’t hugely surprising that research conducted by uSwitch has shown that 78% of consumers are worried about the cost of their energy bills this winter and that a total of 22 million households will be rationing their fuel consumption as a result.
Many of those 22 million homes will be doing so even if it means putting their health at risk, particularly those of an older age. Their hand has been forced by our major energy companies, four of which have raised the cost of gas and electricity before we even progress into the middle of winter, with the other two energy firms expected to announce similar measures imminently.
Rather than completely turn off your thermostat or keep light switches permanently in the ‘off’ position, we advocate that you take more notice of what you use and it won’t cost you a penny to do it.
Here’s how:
1. Turn off lights in any room that’s unoccupied. That means switching them off each time you leave a room and turning them all off anytime you leave the house.
2. Use the timer option on your boiler so that rooms only get heated when necessary such as when you first get up in the morning or get in from work.
3. Fit energy-saving light bulbs throughout the house.
4. Stop leaving appliances on standby. Turn them all off at the wall.
5. When darkness falls, draw all the curtains in the house to help retain any heat generated.
6. Never over boil your kettle and only boil the required amount of water.
7. Cut down on hot showers and baths and limit the time you spend in the shower.
8. After cooking food, heat your kitchen by leaving the oven door open.
9. Have a regular scout around the house to check that the kids aren’t needlessly wasting energy.
10. Rely on candlelight more often. It helps create a whole different mood and atmosphere too.
If you have the money then look into the installation of new windows and doors to help bring down your bills even further.
