How To Heat Your Home For Less This Winter
This year has seen the UK experience its hottest summer since 2006 but that will have little or no influence on how cold the next few winter months will be. Last winter stretched into March/April of this year, with large parts of the country still experiencing snowfall at a time of year when you would usually expect a noticeable rise in warmth.
Who knows what this winter has in stored for us. It’s best to be prepared for every eventuality, particularly if you don’t want to be burdened with an expensive heating bill throughout the season.
The installation of new windows and doors should be a given if you have never replaced your current single glazed designs. Changing your habits can also have a significantly positive effect on heating costs, something you can do in many ways, costing you absolutely nothing, some of which you may never have even thought of:
Leave the oven door open after cooking
When cooking food your oven will reach extreme temperatures. When you have removed your dish from the oven, leave the door open and let the heat circulate around your kitchen. Just be careful not to walk into it while it’s ajar!
Apply tin foil to the back of your radiators
Wrapping tin foil to the back of your radiators will help reflect heat back into the room, rather than allow it to escape through the walls of the property.
Wear an extra layer of clothing
You can’t complain about your house feeling cold if you walk round in a t-shirt and shorts during the winter time. Put on a thick jumper, with a t-shirt underneath, and comfortable pair of trousers.
Close the curtains at night
When the sunsets and it starts to become a little dark, draw your curtains to help keep any heat generated firmly trapped inside. A thick pair of curtains will obviously work best.
Bleed your radiators
It will only take a few minutes of your time to bleed the radiators and get rid of any trapped air that has built up. This will help improve their functionality and performance.
Use your timer
Instead of heating up rooms when they may not necessarily be occupied, set a timer so that your heating comes on as and when you know that someone will be at home. And don’t forget to completely turn it off at night.
Dry your clothes outside
The weather is extremely unpredictable so there is always the chance that we may get the odd warm winter day. If we do then leave then hang up any wet clothes outside.
