Is A UPVC Door Or Composite Door The Right Choice For Your Home?

Our homes are made up of many essential features and the front door is one of them, a component that’s as integral as just about anything else.

A front door can influence more than just the character of the building, but also how a house is perceived by other people and its security.

Putting it into context like this may lead you to conclude that you want a new front door and in the running as a replacement will be a UPVC door or composite door.

We probably don’t need to tell you too much about UPVC doors as they’ve been around long enough for most to know what they are, but composite doors may be something of a mystery to some.

What is a composite door?

Something described as ‘composite’ contains several parts or elements – a composite door is manufactured from UPVC, wood, foam, and a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic skin).

The inclusion of wood helps to give a composite door its wood grain effect and make it almost look timber-like. It’s thanks to the GRP skin that it is far more robust, unyielding and water-resistant than old-style timber doors.

If it’s strength that you want, a composite door won’t let you down, particularly if it’s bought from Visual.

How is it different from a UPVC door?

The UPVC door is purely built from a plastic material, so it doesn’t have the depth of a composite door frame, which has a thickness of around 44mm, while a UPVC door frame is generally about 28mm thick.

In general, composite doors cost a little more than UPVC doors and that can be explained by the utilisation of more materials in their fabrication.

Make no mistake though, despite being less costly, UPVC doors still excel in the areas of thermal efficiency and security and are a first-rate option.

How do you clean and maintain the two doors?

Without any great difficulty is the honest answer as the frames can be wiped clean with a soft cloth and warm soapy water and this only needs to be done every four months. Steer clear of using solvent based cleaners or abrasive materials.

Lubricate the hinges, locks, handle and door furniture, if required, once a year.

To stop water finding its way into the seals, regularly remove any debris in the threshold or the door’s drainage holes – check for debris on a frequent basis during periods of heavy rainfall.
