The Thin End Of The Wedge: Introducing Britain’s Narrowest House
We all work so hard nowadays that it’s vitally important that you recharge the batteries whenever you get the opportunity and there’s nowhere better to do that than at home. To do so, it’s nice to have a little bit of spaciousness to capture a luxurious form of home living. Sound idyllic to you?
If it does then you may want to avoid the polar opposite option which is to live somewhere like the property nicknamed ‘The Wedge’ located on Great Cumbrae, just off the North Ayrshire Coast in Scotland, officially recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as ‘Britain’s Narrowest House’.
It earned its record breaking status purely by accident as the owners at the time were completely oblivious to its unique size. It was only when an architect friend pointed out to them that it may be sleeker than a house south of the border that had recently been christened with the same title that they decided to get it measured.
The ‘Wedge’ nickname was established due to it resembling a wedge of cheese, though the fact that it is so tightly wedged between two shops would be a far more reasonable explanation.
The front entrance into the building measures just 47 inches (1.19m) wide so anyone with aspirations of living there would definitely need to lay off the fatty foods to ensure they can fit through the door!
Coincidentally, at its widest point, it spans a more reasonable 6.7m by 3.35m.
Comprised of two floors, it reputedly encompasses a small porch, lounge/kitchen downstairs and a bedroom and bathroom/shower-room on the upper level.
The house went on the market back in 2001 and was purchased by a couple from Essex for an estimated £27,000 who intended to utilise it as a holiday home.
It would be interesting to know if they still own the property or whether they’ve outgrown it and moved on.
If you’ve outgrown your home, then how about installing a conservatory or orangery from Conservatory, Window and Door Outlet in preference to relocating.
